ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the connection between the dreaming mind and the waking world.  Dream states provide an opportunity to couple directly to the psyche and the collective unconscious.  It is a particularly rewarding state of consciousness, one that is simultaneously subtle, precarious and exciting.  I seek to enter a similar state when working with brush, acrylic, and canvass.

My artistic process pursues the emotive forces and fantastic landscapes experienced while in these subtle states of consciousness, with the goal of carrying them forth into the waking world as artistic artifacts. I labor to enter a state wherein there exists a hyper-awareness that I am merely a participating vessel in the process.  As dreams are often non-linear and driven by obscure but well-accepted narratives, the work of painting unfolds in moments of alternating confusion and clarity as a story eventually emerges from the void. To that end, I often work in an intuitive and gestural state, responding to the needs of the moment while seeking balance and cohesion between form, hue, and value.

Ultimately, the goal of my work is to place the viewer inside of these stories in the hope that the work bypasses the conscious mind to connect directly with one’s essential nature.
