BIRTHRIGHT & PROCESS | Using the Act of Creation as a Guide

Salem Mural Slam 2019

I had a blast participating in a live public mural painting event this past weekend and discovered deep connections both within myself as well as within this community of artists and art lovers that joined forces to make such an experience possible. A few things I walked away with:

First off - Creativity is your birthright. Creating with our voices, our bodies, our hands, it's all a part of our human inheritance and our collective consciousness. Don't let anyone tell you it isn't, especially yourself. Secondly - We all have our own process. The diversity in creative process and outcomes is astounding, even within a singular medium such as painting. Each artists approach is a reflection of their unique individuality.

For my part, I don't always like to follow rules - even my own. So it was crazy challenging recreating my sketch into large format within a given period of time. I suppose that is why I focused in on the background of the work for the entirety of the first day. It left me free to dance across the canvass, moving with intuition, creative vigor, ultimately just letting the experience of creation itself be my guide. By the end of the first day of painting, 10 hours later. I had allowed these incredible forces to carve out a piece of work I was truly proud of, and in so doing discovered that the free flowing, intuitive, gestural aspects of my work are what excite me most and are where I want to focus my efforts moving forward. Importantly - It's never too late.

You want to be an Artist? Make Art. Make the choice, and keep making the choice. It’s something I tell myself nearly every day. The only one between you and your art is you. Have the courage and the will to get out of the way and amazing things can happen. Finally - It’s about the connections! Get out there and find others who are passionate about sharing their talents in an effort to make our communities vibrant.
